Popular since ancient times, the
sapphire is second only to diamonds in hardness and some would say
beauty. Sapphires and rubies are formed form a material called corundum
and originate from many places around the world including Myanmar, Sri
Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Tanzania, Madagascar, Australia and
Montana in the United States.
Sapphires are principally grouped into
blue sapphires and fancy sapphires which include all other colors.
Sapphires can be found in an exciting array of rainbow colors from red
(ruby) to violet to pink to green to yellow with corn flower blue being
the most highly prized color. Star sapphires with their mysterious
optical rayed stars have long been coveted for their beauty.
