The United States Federal Trade Commission publishes guidelines for acceptable marking standards for platinum jewelry sold in the US. Platinum jewelry that contains at least 95% pure platinum (950 parts per thousand) may be marked or described "Platinum" lower purities are marked with "Plat" or "Pt" in front of a number that represents the amount of pure platinum in the mix. Jewelry containing less than 50 percent pure platinum content cannot be marked with the word platinum or "Plat" or "Pt" abbreviations.
